Long Live The King!

Which breed has been the most popular in America for 21 consecutive years? According to the American Kennel Club (AKC®) nationwide registration statistics, out of 167 recognized breeds, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular. The Golden Retriever has moved back up the rankings to the fourth popular spot.

What about the other retriever breeds? Here are the AKC statistics over the last 10 years.

Below are some historical comparisons identifying breeds that retrievers have surpassed or have been surpassed by that resulted in their current ranking.

Golden Retrievers are maintaining their spot in the Top 5 over the last 5 years, with German Shepherd Dogs, Yorkshire Terriers, and Beagles trading top rankings.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers dropped in popularity after 2005 but have been making a move in the positive direction ever since. Over the lasty year, the breed that surpassed the Chesapeake’s in popularity was the American English Coonhound whereas the Chesapeake over took the Bloodhounds, Leonbergers, and St. Benards.

Flat-Coated Retrievers maintained steady popularity from 2000 to 2005, dropped a few spots through 2010, and are more popular in 2011 than they were in 2000. Some of the breeds that were surpassed by Flat Coats in popularity are Standard Schnauzers, Wirehaired Pointing Griffons, Gordon Setters and Toy Fox Hound.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers were not yet a recognized breed in the year 2001 but ever since they were, the breed has seen an upward trend. Over the years, Duck Tollers have surpassed the following breeds in popularity: Australian Terriers, Norfolk Terriers, Belgian Sheepdogs, American Eskimo Dogs, Pointers, and Belgian Tervurens.

Curly-Coated Retrievers have dropped in popularity over the last 10 years. Some of the breeds that were less popular but have surpassed Curly Coats in popularity over the last year are the Lowchen, Irish Water Spaniel, and Ibizan Hounds.

Top Breeds in Major Areas in the United States

AKC also reports the Top 10 breeds from major cities in the U.S. Of these 41 cities, both Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers were in the Top 10 except for Detroit, Honolulu, and Tampa. In most cities, the Labrador Retriever was more popular than the Golden Retriever; however, in Providence and West Palm Beach, the Golden Retriever was more popular.
