A Beautiful Boykin Spaniel Puppy

Ok, ok I know a Boykin Spaniel is not a retriever, at least not in its breed name, however, these little fireplugs were originally bred in the early 1900’s by South Carolina hunters to be a great all-around hunting retrievers for hunting ducks and wild turkeys. They needed a dog that was compact enough to ride in a boat and have the ability to retrieve in both land and water. L.W. “Whit” Boykin (1861-1932), is credited with developing this small multipurpose retriever.

I had the pleasure to meet a 6 month old Boykin Spaniel puppy last week while helping out as a “bird boy” for a hunt training group. She was a really friendly little pup and she wanted to be part of the action. She showed off her retrieving chops on both water and land. As a result, I want to do a full blown article on this great little retriever sometime in the future. In the meantime, suffice it to say that even though this breed is called the Boykin Spaniel, it has the heartbeat of a great retriever!
