This Sucks!

If you own a Retriever, you know about dog hair! Our Labradors live in our house with us so dog hair and fresh Seattle mud is a constant battle for us. We own two Dyson DC25 Animals – one for our house and one for our RV. As I walked through our local Costco I saw a woman demonstrating the Dyson DC44 Animal Cordless Vacuum. I am generally skeptical of these demonstrations but I was intrigued as I am already an owner of some great Dyson products. The first thing I noticed about the Dyson DC44 Animal Cordless Vacuum is that it has really great suction. The demonstrator rolled the vacuum across a rug with a bunch of debris on it and the DC44 sucked it up with no problem. It also has some great attachments that make it good for cleaning up stairs, furniture, and the inside of your car.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The Dyson DC44 Animal has all of the makings of a great portable vacuum cleaner. Great suction, great attachments, easy to use, a highly maneuverable machine, and a great company that stands behind their products. But there are also some downsides to this vacuum. If you have more than one dog that can produce a lot of hair in your house, even in just one day. The Dyson DC44 Animal cordless has a pretty small canister which means you need to empty it a lot if you have a bigger job. You might say, “well, why don’t you just bring out you bigger DC25 Animal to do the job?”. For me, I just want to get it cleaned up which is what makes the Dyson DC44 Animal cordless a great vacuum. So my trade off is emptying the canister more often and having to plug in rather than maneuvering the bigger Dyson DC25 Animal. Finally is the overall weight. The Dyson DC44 Animal cordless is not what I would classify as light weight. The canister is actually kind of heavy. Fortunately this is offset by the pure sucking power which makes quick work of most jobs. Also there is no way to lock the Dyson DC44 Animal cordless into the “on” position. I am sure that is to preserve the battery; however, it is a hassle to hold the trigger down all the time. Dyson, please add this feature!

Final Analysis

I have owned the Dyson DC44 Animal cordless for about a month. It just so happened that all of our Labradors blew their coat as soon as I brought it home. We used to use a dry mop to get most of the hair and daily dirt brought in by our Labradors. The problem was that a dry mop does not get into some of the spots that the Dyson DC44 Animal cordless gets into and a mop just does not compare to the Dyson in terms of cleaning power. I am very impressed by the Dyson DC44 Animal’s ability to pick up dirt off of carpets too. This is usually a tough job for small vacuums. I guess the main thing I like about the Dyson DC44 Animal cordless is its ability to get into small places like under couches, refrigerators, cabinets, etc.

I highly recommend the Dyson DC44 Animal Cordless Vacuum to any retriever owner and if you also happen to have an RV it makes a great portable ceaner for your RV.

  1. I agree that it would be nice if there were some kind of trigger lock or on/off toggle on the DC44 to make it easier to cover large areas. Other than that, it’s about as good as it gets for a cordless!
