Who needs judges? WE ALL DO! Judges help us earn the coveted ribbons and titles that we want so badly for our dogs. But most of the time, we only interact with them briefly in the ring or in the field when our dog is being observed. We, at Retriever Life, wanted to get to know these indispensable people better. We hope you enjoy as much as we do getting to know these dedicated people  outside of competition, as Judges Are People Too. If you have a question you’d like asked or you want to recommend a judge to highlight, please contact misha@retrieverlife.com.

Linda was kind enough to set aside time out of her busy schedule to tell us a little bit about herself. We hope you enjoy getting to know her!

What are you breeding or what have you bred in the past?

When I was young my family owned several German Shorthair Pointers, English Setters and a couple of Austrailian Shepherds. I have bred Labradors for the past 25 years and for about 20 yrs, I have bred Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

What breeds are you qualified to judge?

I currently judge Labrador Retrievers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

What are your proudest moments or accomplishments?

Showing dogs has been great fun, the first Labrador I owned was purchased from Zane Hills Labradors, Ralph and Kathy Root. I finished his Championship owner handled and showed him to BOSS at the National Specialty in 1992 under English judge Janice Pritchard.

I also enjoyed some fabulous success with a Cavalier of my breeding, she was Best in Sweepstakes at the National Specialty and also Winners Bitch at the same National Specialty from the 12-18 month class, it was a great weekend!

What are your favorite names?

For dogs? Those must be two syllables as I think that sounds better when you call them and I like to include some “theme” or part of the sire or dam’s name.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would learn to be more relaxed and spontaneous!

What are you having for dinner tonight?

Hmmmm, good question, probably way too many carbs!

What is your current state of mind?

I am at a stage of re-grouping my personal life as well as my breeding program so that would go along with some apprehension, neither are easy to re-build.

Do you own pets besides dogs? What kind?

I have owned and shown horses in the past but now I just share my house with the Labradors and three cats….the cats are very demanding that they be fed on a schedule! .

What is your favorite drink?

Definitely a cold Corona on a warm summer day!

What are you reading right now?

I am not a huge reader but someone just gave me Roger Blackwell’s new book, Saving America. It is how a “garage entrepreneur” can create a successful business from basic beginnings ….maybe it will work for me!

Have you always had dogs?

I have always had dogs since I was young. I had hunting dogs like beagles and pointers when I was younger. When I was 32 I got my first show dog, which was an English Springer Spaniel. He was a pretty nice dog and after he got his championship I was hooked!

What type of music do you listen to?

I do listen to modern rock music and sing….only when I am alone in the car which should make everyone happy since I cannot sing well!

What is one of your favorite movies?

All of the Harry Potter movies, especially the first one, Sorcerers Stone.

When are you the happiest?

When I have finished one of my many home repair/remodel projects!

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

ABSOLUTELY!   It works well with the students I teach as they are young adult professionals and relate to it well!

What do you do to spoil yourself?

Sleep later on weekend mornings, unless I have a dog show to attend.

Where would you like to travel to?

I would like to visit England, Crufts certainly would be on the trip agenda.

Where would you like to live?

After visiting Oregon I could be convinced to stay there, but I do like winter weather so anywhere it is not humid in the summer and snow in the winter would be perfect for me. I think Wisconsin is a lovely state in all seasons.

Which living person do you most admire?

My cousin Mary Ruth, she is my idol, a totally self sufficient woman and one of the kindest people I have ever known.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Be able to dance…perhaps that should go along with improving my singing!

What is your motto?

Not sure it is always popular but …..IF YOU WANT A JOB DONE CORRECTLY, DO IT YOURSELF!
