Sugar Kane Enjoys A Day At The Dog Show!

As I sat outside the ring at the Puyallup Kennel Club dog show this weekend and watched my 18 month old Yellow Labrador Retriever – Misty Mountain Some Like It Hot (Sugar Kane) strut her stuff around the ring I noticed the sense of pure joy she expressed. Her handler, Ellen Cottingham hand stacked her before judge Dana Cline went over her. Sugar Kane was happy as a clam. Her tail wagging like she was just happy to be alive. She did not win this weekend and on Saturday the judge placed our little sugar in 4th place out of 4 dogs. He seemed to be looking back to see if he could place her farther back in line to avoid giving her a ribbon at all. Now I could have been bummed out about this turn of events but I just continued to watch Sugar and she seemed happier the farther back in the line she was placed. I started to laugh. What else could I do?

Did Sugar Kane care? No way. Her tail was wagging and when she came out of the ring and she greeted us like we were long lost friends. Sugar Kane rolled on her back and asked us for a belly rub and then looked at us for some treats after her belly was satisifed. While I was watching her have her fun I started to realize that she is just as happy when she wins as when she loses. There is no ego attached to her spirit. I know there are some important life lessons I can learn from this great little girl. Something like there is no winning or losing there is just life and the hope of another treat! Is this Zen… I am not really sure, but Sugar Kane is now my guru for living life to its fullest!

Thanks Jeff! She is on the road now with Ellen Cottingham. Hoping for some more points before she comes home in a couple of weeks!

I think when our dog senses that we are happy, then he is happy. And when we sense our dog is happy, we are happy. It’s not only Zen-like, but quite symbiotic, as well. Life doesn’t get better than that, as your pack can well attest. 🙂

I have baby sister “Hyak” one of Summit’s “H”litter. What a fun little girl and just as good looking as her big brother “Ranger”

This is a great story. Since I’m reading it at 6:27PM on Friday, at the office, I am now going to turn off my PC and go home to my darling cat.

    Toni,
What a great story. Wise words; we can learn so much from our dogs if we just pay attention. Good job! 🙂
