I received Garth Stein’s “The Art Of Racing In The Rain” as a gift from my brother. Initially this gift gathered dust on my bookshelf because I had recently finished reading “Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog” and I wrongly assumed that this book just wanted to ride the wave of Marley’s success. But then the title once again grabbed my attention because it seemed like there might be some life lessons contained within this story. I was not disappointed. My passion for Formula One racing is only outweighed by my love for our Labrador Retrievers. This book has lots of fast cars and one great dog as its protagonist. Even if you are not a racing aficionado, “The Art Of Racing In The Rain” offers any dog lover an abundance of “treats”.

“The Art Of Racing In The Rain” is Garth Stein’s third novel and he has proven himself a wonderful storyteller. Enzo is a retriever/terrier mix who lives in Seattle with the Swift family – Denny, Eve, and their daughter Zoe. The story is told through Enzo’s voice and begins in the last hours of his life. Enzo waits patiently for his Denny to come home and take him out for their usual walk around the neighborhood. His eyes are too blurry from cataracts and joints are aching from arthritis. Enzo realizes that he is close to the end of this life but he takes heart in the Mongolian belief that when a dog has finished his lifetimes living as a dog, his next life will be as a man. Enzo knows this is his last life as a dog and he will reunite with Denny in his next life!

Enzo traces his life from his puppyhood where Denny first introduces him to the joy of racing by watching tapes of old races on TV. Both Denny and Enzo love the late, great Formula One racer – Ayrton Senna who was famous for his mastery of racing in the rain. Enzo realizes that lessons learned on the race track are also lessons he can take to his next life as a human.

Like real life Enzo’s story is full of ups and downs from meeting Eve (Denny’s future wife) to gut wrenching family struggles that reminds us just why our dogs hold such an important place in our lives. “The Art Of Racing In The Rain” is a must-read story for anyone that loves dogs. Enzo is an inspiration for us all.

In breaking news, we found out that “The Art Of Racing In The Rain” is currently getting a movie treatment by Universal Studios. It stars Grey’s Anatomy‘s “McDreamy” – Patrick Dempsey. It is expected to hit the big screen sometime in 2012. We can’t wait! In the meantime get this book! It is a great read for these cold winter days.
